What is Nihontekini?

A Japanese flashcard app for iPhone. You build decks with any chatbot, or let an AI agent add cards over MCP. Each word is filled in from open dictionaries with readings, a kanji breakdown and example sentences, then scheduled so it comes back right before you forget it.

Do I need an account?

No. As a guest you can study, review and edit your decks on your phone, offline. An account adds backup, sync across devices, matching pasted imports against the dictionary, and agents over MCP. Create one any time; nothing on your phone is lost.

Is there an Android or web version?

Not yet. Nihontekini is an iPhone app for now.

What level is it for?

Brand new learners through advanced, from kana to JLPT N1. There are kana decks if you are just starting, ready decks for each level, and your own decks for anything you read, watch or hear.

Which chatbots work?

Any of them: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and others. Prompts ask for a fixed format, but the app also reads answers with chatter around them, or simple lines like term | reading | meaning.

What if the dictionary doesn’t know a word?

It is imported as written and marked so you can check it. That is common for slang. Words with several dictionary entries ask you to pick the right one.

What is MCP, and how do I connect an agent?

The Model Context Protocol lets an AI agent such as Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor read your decks, add and fix cards, check your progress and quiz you on your weak words, with no copy and paste. It needs an account. Add https://api.nihontekini.app/mcp as a custom connector in your agent and sign in with your Nihontekini account; the app’s AI agents screen has step-by-step instructions, and the connector is explained in detail for Claude and ChatGPT. Every batch an agent adds can be undone for 7 days, and you can revoke it at any time.

How does scheduling work?

Nihontekini uses FSRS, the scheduler Anki uses, aiming for 90% recall. You can set the target between 80% and 95%. The day rolls over at 4:00, so late-night study counts for the same day.

What is the quick check?

After you learn new words, a short quiz checks what stuck. A word joins your review schedule only after it passes, so the schedule never fills with words you never really learned.

Can I import my Anki decks?

Not yet. You can already export all your decks as JSON, and as CSV for Anki.

What is free, and what does Plus add?

Studying your own cards is free and unlimited. On the free plan, agents can add 50 cards and make 3 quizzes a month, and Test me runs once a day. Plus removes those limits, unlocks the N4 to N1 decks, and lets you pick Awawa-chan’s glow colours.

How do I cancel or restore Plus?

Plus is bought through the App Store, so you cancel it in Settings, then your name, then Subscriptions. On a new phone, sign in and tap Restore purchases on the Plus screen.

Does it work offline?

Studying, reviews and editing work fully offline. Looking up new words, importing and syncing need a connection, and catch up when you are back online.

How do I delete my account?

In the app: Me, then Account, then Delete account. It deletes your data on our servers and revokes every agent connection. You can keep a copy on your phone as a guest.

Where does the dictionary data come from?

JMdict and KANJIDIC2 from the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group, stroke order from KanjiVG, and example sentences from Tatoeba. Their licences are listed in the app under Credits and in our terms.
